The Basilica della Santa Casa, officially known as the Basilica of the Holy House, stands in Loreto, Italy as the most important Marian shrine in Europe. Dedicated to the miraculous house of the Virgin Mary, the basilica houses the actual sandstone structure—measuring just over 30 ft long and 13 ft wide—within a richly decorated late‑Gothic courtyard that dates back to 1468. The complex also contains the celebrated Black Madonna of Loreto, a gold‑adorned marble statue of the Virgin and Child, the marble screen designed by Donato Bramante that surrounds the House, and the 17th‑century Hall of the Treasury, which displays votive offerings and liturgical treasures.
