About

Porta Praetoria, the eastern gate of the ancient city of Aosta, stands as a well‑preserved testament to Roman engineering. Situated on Piazza Porta Pretoria in the heart of the Aosta Valley, this double‑arched gateway dates back to the 1st century AD and marks the original entrance to the Roman colony of Augusta Praetoria. Enclosed within a 724 × 572 m rectangular wall that rises approximately 6.4 m high, the gate is flanked by towers—such as the Leper's Tower—highlighting the military importance of the Roman frontier. The gate’s three arches and preserved stonework offer visitors an intimate glimpse of the city’s ancient civic architecture, while the surrounding medieval streets create a lively contrast between past and present.
