Lago di Mergozzo
About
Lago di Mergozzo, also known as Lake Mergozzo, is a picturesque sub‑alpine lake located in the province of Verbano‑Cusio‑Ossola, Piedmont, just west of Lago Maggiore. Encompassing 1.81 km² at 195 m above sea level, the lake is fed by clean mountain streams such as the Rio Bracchio and the Rio Rescina and is fed by the gentle slopes of Monte Orfano and the Corni di Nibbio mountain range. Because motorboats are prohibited, the water remains one of the most unspoiled in Italy, attracting visitors from northern Europe for peaceful walks, birdwatching, and a refreshing escape into nature. The nearby town of Mergozzo lends the lake its name, while surrounding villages—Fondotoce, Montorfano, and Verbania—provide easy access and charming rural hospitality. Visitors can enjoy scenic walking paths along the shore, cycling routes, and the gentle ascent to Monte Orfano, which offers panoramic views of the lake and the valley. While the lake itself is free to enter, small visitor centres offer information on local flora, fauna, and conservation efforts.
