About

The suggestive route starts from the Norman-Swabian Castle, where remains of a Byzantine settlement (10th century AD) are hidden, pre-existing the fortress construction. Beneath the north wing of the Castle, investigations conducted in the 1970 brought to light the remains of the sacred quarter of the city, with a residual portion of a church and the adjacent burial ground. The tour continues in the "Succorpo" of the Romanesque Cathedral, an area of extraordinary historical and archaeological interest, which contains stratified remains dating back to a period between the Roman age and the Middle Ages. In the "Succorpo" there is an articulated area, whose most valuable element is the polychrome mosaic commissioned by Timoteo around the sixth century AD. The third and final stage is the archaeological area enclosed in the basement of Palazzo Simi, with ruins of a Roman Empire wall and a Byzantine church.
