About

The Vajont Dam, situated in Erto e Casso in northern Italy, was completed in 1959 and quickly became a symbol of ambitious engineering. In October 1963 an uncontrolled landslide generated a massive megatsunami that devastated the town of Longarone, killing nearly 2,000 people and cementing the dam’s tragic legacy. Today the structure stands in ruins, preserved as a stark monument to human error. Visitors are invited to walk the damaged concrete wall, explore the remnants of the reservoir, and learn about the disaster in a small on‑site museum. Guided tours are offered by the ENEL‑owned site, and the annual “Paths of Remembrance” walk honors survivors and victims alike.
