Monastero d'Astino
About
Astino Abbey – known locally as Monastero di Astino – is a striking example of Lombard Romanesque architecture set in the tranquil Astino Valley near Bergamo. Founded around 1070 by the Vallumbrosan Order, the complex evolved over centuries, featuring a 12th‑century bell tower, a 15th‑century cloister, and the Church of “Santo Sepolcro” whose nave and chapels echo the Middle Ages. After deconsecration, the site served as a psychiatric hospital and later a golf centre before returning to sacred roots in the early 21st century. Today the abbey houses the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, a postgraduate program that blends the historic ambiance with contemporary learning. Visitors are drawn to the authentic stonework, the bell tower, and the peaceful cloister – all surrounded by lush parkland that offers a serene escape from urban life. The abbey’s evocative blend of history, architecture, and modern cultural use makes it a hidden gem for travelers seeking insight into regional heritage and innovative design education.
