Mura Venete
About
The Venetian Walls of Bergamo, a stunning 16th‑century fortification that encircles the historic Upper Town, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stretching roughly six kilometres, the walls boast 14 bastions, four main gates—St. James, St. Augustine, St. Lawrence, and St. Alexander—along with a network of gun ports and underground tunnels. Visitors can wander the entire circuit on easy footpaths, enjoying panoramic views of the Orobian Pre‑Alps, the picturesque plains below, and the timeless charm of the city. The walls are free to enter, but several guided experiences, ranging from short walking tours to immersive audio‑guided expeditions, are available for purchase. A walk at sunset is especially romantic, bringing the ancient stones to life against the evening sky.
