Basilica di San Domenico
About
The Basilica di San Domenico sits in the heart of Bologna at Piazza San Domenico, 13, and stands as one of the city’s most celebrated religious and artistic treasures. Originally built by the Dominican Order to house the remains of its founder, Saint Dominic, the church has long been a beacon of spiritual reverence and artistic brilliance. Inside, visitors will discover priceless works by masters such as Guercino, Filippino Lippi, and Ludovico Carracci, as well as a remarkable Renaissance inlay carved by Fra’ Damiano da Bergamo, famously called the eighth wonder of the world. The basilica is also home to a towering Gothic belltower, 51 metres high, and a richly decorated marble tabernacle designed by Niccolò da Puglia. Admission is free for all visitors, making it an ideal stop for both casual tourists and dedicated art lovers. The church is open daily, with convenient afternoon sessions from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm on weekdays. The interior’s grandeur is complemented by the adjoining museum, where two rooms showcase relics, sacred ornaments, and a fine collection of works by the same renowned painters.
