Portico di San Luca
About
The Portico di San Luca is a world‑famous, 3,796‑meter‑long covered walkway that stretches from the historic heart of Bologna to the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine de San Luca on Monte della Guardia. Spanning 666 stone arches, it is the longest covered passage in the world, offering visitors a living museum of medieval walls, Renaissance courtyards and baroque pavilions that have survived wars, restorations and the passage of centuries. Its origins date back to 1041, when private houses opened onto the city walls and the first wooden porticoes were constructed. Over the centuries the walk was expanded and rebuilt in brick and stone, culminating in the 17th‑century stonework we see today. The route is the setting for a centuries‑old procession that carries a Byzantine icon of the Madonna and Child from the city to the sanctuary on Ascension Day. In July 2021, UNESCO recognised the network of Bologna’s porticoes as a World Heritage Site, declaring them of outstanding universal value. Together they cover more than 38 km in the historic centre, rising to 53 km when outlying sections are included, and form an iconic symbol of the city’s civic identity. A stroll along the portico is an exceptional cultural experience: visitors can pause at landmark arches such as the Bonaccorsi and Meloncello, take in panoramic vistas of the city and its green hills, and feel the rhythm of centuries of commerce, learning and devotion that converge beneath the sheltering arches.
