Santuario di Madonna di San Luca
About
The Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca stands majestically on the Colle della Guardia, roughly 300 metres above the heart of Bologna. A baroque basilica crowned with a soaring dome, it serves as a beacon of faith and a pilgrimage hub. Central to its allure is the revered icon of the Virgin Mary, carried each May in a grand procession from the city centre to the shrine, drawing devotees and curious visitors alike. The sanctuary’s origins stretch back to the 12th century, but the present church, completed in 1723, showcases sophisticated baroque artistry and a nave illuminated by frescoes from masters such as Guido Reni. The most celebrated feature, however, is the 3.8‑kilometre Portico di San Luca, boasting 666 arches and recognized as the world’s longest covered arcade—a UNESCO World Heritage site that links the ancient city gate to the hilltop sanctuary. Visitors can explore the sanctuary everyday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (church) and 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (piazzale). The 3.8‑km portico offers a leisurely stroll framed by lush gardens and panoramic vistas of Bologna. Inside, the baroque interior houses the iconic Madonna, a chapel of relics, and a tranquil space for prayer, confession, and quiet reflection—an ideal blend of spirituality, history, and natural beauty.
