About

The Teatro Anatomico, a 17th‑century amphitheatre nestled inside Bologna’s historic Archiginnasio library, was built in 1637 by Antonio Paolucci to host anatomical dissections. The hall is defined by its wooden spruce canopy, stone floor, and an array of 12 bronze statues of celebrated physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen, alongside 20 allegorical figures depicting prominent Bolognese anatomists. A coffered ceiling painted in 1645 showcases zodiac constellations, reflecting the era’s intertwining of medicine and astrology. Though damaged by a 1944 bombing, the theatre was meticulously restored in 2006, preserving its original decor and architectural elegance. Today, visitors experience a unique fusion of scientific history, Renaissance artistry, and theatrical design that offers a rare glimpse into the medical practices of the past.
