About

The Borromean Islands are a cluster of three sizable islands and two islets in Lake Maggiore, situated between Verbania and Stresa in northern Italy. The archipelago takes its name from the historic Borromeo family who began acquiring the islands in the early 16th century, with most still under Borromeo ownership today. Isola Bella dazzles visitors with its 17th‑century palace, terraced gardens and ornate façades; Isola Madre boasts expansive English‑style gardens and a richly furnished palace; and Isola dei Pescatori remains the sole inhabited island, preserving a traditional fishing community. The surrounding islets, such as Isolino di San Giovanni, offer tranquil viewpoints and a glimpse of the region’s rural charm.
