Lago di Dobbiaco
About
Toblacher See—known in Italian as Lago di Dobbiaco—is a picturesque alpine lake nestled in the heart of the South Tyrol region of northern Italy. At an elevation of 1,259 m above sea level, the 14.5 km shoreline is framed by dramatic pre‑alpine cliffs and crystal‑clear waters that reflect the surrounding peaks. The lake itself spans 14.3 ha, with a maximum depth of only 3.5 m, making it a shallow, gentle body that is ideal for gentle walks and birdwatching. A popular family‑friendly trail, the hike to the lake starts from the town of Toblach and follows the well‑marked trail number 29. The route is easy, covering 7.8 km and gaining just 50 m of elevation—the entire walk takes about two hours. Along the way visitors encounter an interactive nature trail that explains local geology, flora, and fauna, as well as a boardwalk across a small wetland area on the south shore that welcomes both pedestrians and hikers with strollers. From the north shore, the tranquil lake offers plenty of spots for picnics, while the west shore hosts a small observation platform where birdwatchers can spot resident species such as kingfishers, mallards, and various swans. The surrounding area also features the historic Grand Hotel, now a cultural center, which provides a picturesque backdrop and a convenient place for refreshments. Whether you’re up for a leisurely stroll, a quick bird‑watching break, or a full afternoon of nature immersion, Toblacher See provides a serene escape with stunning alpine scenery and easy access for visitors of all ages.
