About
Grotto - Typical place of Italian Switzerland. At 700 m above the sea level on Monte Stella which dominates the northern area of the village with its frightening overhangs, and above the cellars partly dug into the rock stands the small church commonly known as San Nicolao, dedicated to the liberating virgin and San Nicola di Bari. Built together with the tower in 1413 by Count Lotteria Rusca, lord of Como and Mendrisio, the church was enlarged and modified in the 17th century. It was also restored in the early seventeenth century and subsequently brought the building to its current state during the 1999 restorations.
