Duomo - Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore
About
Florence Cathedral, officially Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, stands at the heart of Florence’s historic centre. Built between 1296 and 1436 on the site of the former Saint Reparata church, its iconic dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi is the largest brick dome in the world. Constructed in the Gothic style with a blend of Romanesque and Renaissance design, the cathedral’s polychrome marble façade, the brilliant tapestry of stained‑glass windows, and the bronze doors of Giotto create a breathtaking interior that spans 8,300 m². Visitors can climb 463 steps to the cupola, taking in panoramic views of the city, and explore the chapels, crypt, and the adjacent Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Florentine civic pride. The cathedral is open daily from 10:15 to 15:45; guided tours and special events are also available.
