In the heart of Greve in Chianti, on the corner that leads into the square, where there was once an old staging post and, earlier still, the stables of Greve, there is still a peaceful and private place that’s well worth stopping by for a bite to eat. This has been the kingdom of Lucia, Duilia, Lisa, Saro for 33 years: a Tuscan family, three generations at the service of your taste buds, giving you a warm welcome. Lovely people with open and jovial smiles who only want to offer you healthy, genuine and no-frills food in light and welcoming rooms, where the Pompeian red dominates the walls in contrast with the white wood of the chairs and covers. It’s impossible not to start by enjoying one of the wonderful pasta dishes - all of which are strictly based on homemade pasta, every day like in the past, by grandmother Duilia, 85 years of freshness and energy, who, with her fail-safe method, states that all her pasta dishes are successful since nothing ever comes back into the kitchen! Filled pasta, tagliatelle and pappardelle also served with innovative sauces, but all thoroughly researched to enhance the pasta and authentic flavours of Greve. There’s an infinite choice, But the Enoteca Ristorante Il Gallo Nero, which started off with its two pillars - pasta and grilled meats - now offers much more. A reliable place where you eat well and everything at any time of the year since the menus here change with the seasons and the ingredients have no food miles. To finish, saving the best for last, it’s time for dessert, obviously all homemade. Delicious desserts to send the guests off home with a great memory of a lovely evening, washed down with a nice glass of wine perhaps as we shouldn’t forget that the cellar of Il Gallo Nero only contains great Chianti and Tuscan wines! A great dinner for everyone in this place where the hospitality and prices are like trattorias of the past, yet with the selection of culinary excellence worthy of a hip restaurant.
