About

The Cattedrale di San Cerbone, commonly known as the Massa Marittima Cathedral, stands at the heart of the historic Tuscan town of Massa Marittima. This Roman‑Catholic cathedral, once the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Massa Marittima, is a remarkable blend of Romanesque and Sienese Gothic styles. Its Latin‑cross ground plan measures 58.72 m by 18 m, and the façade showcases blind arcades, a loggiato, and a tympanum that reflect Pisan Romanesque influence, whilst the bell tower and upper galleries bear the unmistakable touch of 19th‑century Sienese additions. Inside, worshippers encounter a basilica layout with a nave, transept, and richly decorated chapels. Visitors are greeted by a stunning central rose window of Sienese stained glass, intricate frescoes of the Crucifixion, and a collection of medieval paintings by artists such as Rutilio Manetti and Antonio Nasini. The cathedral also houses a Roman sarcophagus from the 4th century and a 14th‑century cathedral partition that adds to its historical tapestry. Whether you are drawn by architecture, art, or medieval history, the San Cerbone Cathedral offers a serene pilgrimage through centuries of Tuscan heritage.
