Grotte di Pastena
About
The Pastena Caves, located near the town of Pastena in Lazio, Italy, are one of the country’s most impressive show caves. Discovered in 1926 and opened to visitors the following year, the karst system extends almost a kilometre, split into an active lower branch and a fossil upper branch. Guided tours illuminate underground rivers, a shimmering blue lake, dramatic stalactites, a waterfall that cascades into the subterranean valley, and a range of themed chambers, each named after its natural and spiritual character. After the cave experience, visitors can purchase a modest additional fee to include the adjacent Museum of Rural Culture and the Olive Tree, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s agrarian heritage. The caves provide a unique blend of geological wonder, spiritual ambience, and cultural insight, making them a must‑visit for both adventure seekers and history lovers.
