Lago di Canterno
About
Lago di Canterno is a small karst lake situated in the Monti Ernici mountains of the Province of Frosinone, Lazio, Italy. Formed by a collapsed ponor, the lake experiences dramatic water level changes that have earned it the nickname “phantom lake.” The surrounding area has been designated the Riserva naturale del Lago di Canterno, a protected wetland spanning 1,824 hectares that includes the communities of Ferentino, Fiuggi, Fumone, Torre Cajetani, and Trivigliano. The reserve boasts a diverse ecosystem: over a dozen species of heron, mallard, owl, buzzard, as well as foxes, martens, squirrels, and many other mammals. Visitors can walk amid willow groves, chestnut trees, and pine groves, and come across rare plant species such as Persicaria amphibia and Pulicaria vulgaris. The natural setting and wildlife make it a quiet, contemplative place to observe the unique geological and ecological character of central Italy.
