Aquarium of Genoa
About
The Aquarium of Genoa, the largest in Italy and a leading European marine attraction, opened its doors in 1993 as part of the city’s Expo 1992 redevelopment. Designed by Renzo Piano, the modernist structure sits in Genoa’s historic Old Harbour and houses more than 12,000 animals representing over 500 species. Its expansive 10,000‑m² exhibition space features a diverse array of ecosystems—from tropical reefs and Mediterranean seas to polar regions—allowing visitors to walk through recreated habitats and observe marine life in striking, interactive exhibits. The museum is not only a visual feast but also a hub for scientific research, conservation initiatives, and environmental education, offering guided tours, feeding sessions, and special programs such as “Aquarium Adventure” and “Secret Aquarium.” A typical visit lasts about three to four hours, giving guests ample time to explore the highlights and learn about the importance of marine biodiversity.
