Galata Museo Del Mare
About
The Galata – Museo del Mare is a world‑class maritime museum located in the historic Darsena district of Genoa, Italy. Housed in the renovated Palazzo Galata, the museum opened in 2004 as part of Genoa’s celebration as European Capital of Culture and has since grown into the largest museum of its kind in the Mediterranean. Visitors step onto a faithful 17th‑century Genoese galley that has been reconstructed to scale, then wander through a series of interactive galleries that chronicle every era of seafaring—from ancient galleys to modern transatlantic liners. One of the museum’s standout features is the submarine Nazario Sauro, a diesel‑electric vessel of the Italian Navy, which docks in front of the museum and offers guided tours of its propulsion systems, control room, and crew quarters. The museum’s exhibition program also explores the human side of maritime history. The “La Merica” and “Memory & Migration” displays trace the stories of Italian emigrants, the waves of migration through the Mediterranean, and the present‑day challenges of European maritime travel. With its blend of hands‑on technology, historic artifacts, and compelling storytelling, the Galata – Museo del Mare offers a complete maritime adventure for families, history enthusiasts, and curiosity‑driven travelers alike.
