Stadio Luigi Ferraris
About
Stadio Luigi Ferraris—also known as the Marassi—is the historic heart of Genoa’s football culture. Since its opening in 1911, the multi‑purpose stadium has remained the oldest football venue still in use in Italy, proudly hosting the home matches of both Genoa C.F.C. and U.C. Sampdoria. With a grass pitch measuring 105 × 68 m and a seating capacity of just over 33,000, the stadium has hosted major events ranging from Serie A fixtures to the 1990 FIFA World Cup group‑stage and round‑of‑sixteen games, as well as key national rugby matches and occasional concerts. Beyond its sporting pedigree, Stadio Luigi Ferraris showcases a blend of early 20th‑century architecture and modern renovations carried out in 1987‑1989 and again in 2015‑2018 under the guidance of architects Vittorio Gregotti and others. The stadium’s design has been praised for its unobstructed sightlines and panoramic views of the Ligurian landscape. Visitors can experience the cavernous “Marassi” terraces, the elegant press boxes, and the iconic rooftops that crown the stands. A visit to the stadium offers football enthusiasts a chance to step into the birthplace of Italian football’s proud traditions while also appreciating the venue’s evolving history and its role as a key sporting landmark in Liguria.
