About

Castello Arabo-Normanno di Taormina (Monte Tauro Castle or Saraceno Castle) Perched on the rocky summit of Monte Tauro at 397 meters, the Castello Arabo-Normanno di Taormina offers breathtaking views of the Ionian coast, from the Strait of Messina in the north to the Alcantara Valley and Mount Etna in the south, and the Peloritani mountains to the west. Historically, the castle was one of Taormina's two ancient acropolises, serving as a strategic point for controlling routes between Catania and Messina. Initially fortified during the Byzantine era, it played a key role in defense against Arab invasions in the 10th century. The Normans eventually captured it in 1079 by besieging and cutting off supplies. In the 15th century, the castle underwent restorations under various rulers, including the Aragonese and Spanish. It also saw the construction of the Church of Madonna della Rocca, founded by Abbot Francesco Raineri, incorporating the natural rock formation into its structure.
