About

The Fortress of Fenestrelle, perched high above the Chisone Valley in the Piedmont region, is a magnificent testament to 18th‑century military engineering. Spanning roughly 130 hectares, it is widely regarded as the largest alpine fortification in Europe, built over a 120‑year period from 1728 to 1850 under the direction of architect Ignazio Bertola. The fortress was designed to dominate the high road between Turin and the French border, with a network of walls, underground chambers, and a series of formidable towers. One of the fortress’s most striking features is its extensive staircase system. Visitors can climb nearly 4,000 steps inside the fortress and almost 2,500 steps on the outside ramp – the longest continuous staircase in Europe – a dizzying yet thrilling journey that offers a rare glimpse into the life of soldiers who lived and worked there. The castle’s labyrinthine passages and layered fortifications were constructed on a sheer cliff face that rises over 800 meters, creating a dramatic backdrop for panoramic views of the surrounding valley and the city of Turin. Today, the fortress welcomes the public thanks to the dedication of volunteers from the Progetto San Carlo (ONLUS) association. Guided tours guide visitors through the main gates, underground barracks, and surviving artillery emplacements, all of which have been meticulously restored. The thick walls echo the passage of history, while the terraces and observation points provide breathtaking vistas that make the climb worth the effort. Beyond its military past, the fortress is now a cultural landmark and heritage site recognized by the World Monuments Fund, symbolizing the resilience of the Piedmontese people. Its preserved architecture and the stories of its former prisoners and soldiers offer both an educational experience and a moving reminder of the region’s rich history.
