About

The Miniera di Montevecchio is a living museum nestled within the historic Montevecchio mine, one of the most important industrial sites in southern Sardinia. Forms part of the Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna and is a recognised European Geopark, the site offers a rare glimpse into Sardinia’s extensive mining heritage—from prehistoric stone tools to 19th‑century industrial metallurgy. Visitors follow guided trails through underground galleries, liberated shafts, and former workshops, encountering original mining equipment, ore samples and archival photographs that chronicle the evolution of extraction techniques over the centuries. Among the most striking attractions is the preserved “Arabesque” shaft, where artifacts from the Pinus culture reveal mining activities dating back to the 6th millennium BC. The museum also showcases the factory’s worker dormitories, a manor house that housed the mine director, and the majestic park surrounding the site, home to the native Sardinian deer. The combination of geological wonders and sociocultural narratives makes the visit a unique educational experience. The mineral heritage, coupled with the park’s natural beauty, has earned the mine the title of “Destination of Excellence” by the European Commission in 2011 and continues to attract history lovers, industrial archeology enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
