Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina
About
The Church of Santa Maria della Spina, located on the left bank of the Arno River in Pisa, stands as one of the city’s most exquisite examples of Pisan Gothic architecture. Built around 1230 and enlarged after 1325, the modest church’s polychrome marble façade is adorned with intricate sculptures by early‑14th‑century masters such as Giovanni Pisano and Nino Pisano. Inside, visitors are immersed in a single, elegantly vaulted space that houses the famed “Madonna of the Rose” ensemble – a masterpiece by Andrea and Nino Pisano – and the relocated “Madonna del Latte”. Though its exterior boasts ornate details, the interior offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere, ideal for visitors who appreciate art, history, and the spiritual ambiance of medieval Pisa.
