Santuario di Montenero
About
Santuario di Montenero is a Marian sanctuary perched on the hilltop of Montenero, a quarter of Livorno in Tuscany, Italy. The site sits at 190 meters above sea level, providing visitors with sweeping views of the Ligurian Sea and the Po Valley. Dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, the sanctuary was erected in the 17th century and has since become an essential pilgrimage destination. A historic funicular connects the lower Montenero Basso to the upper sanctuary, traversing picturesque villas that once hosted figures such as the poet George Gordon Byron. Inside, the Baroque nave houses a gilded statue of the Virgin and a revered icon, complemented by a small museum and tranquil gardens. The combination of spiritual atmosphere and panoramic scenery makes Santuario di Montenero a popular stop for both devout visitors and casual tourists alike.
