About
Ponte della Maddalena is a 11th‑century stone arch bridge spanning the Serchio River near Borgo a Mozzano in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. Believed to have been commissioned by Countess Matilda of Tuscany, the bridge’s 37.8‑metre span and robust masonry made it a vital crossing on the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route. Over the centuries it earned the nickname “Ponte del Diavolo” (Bridge of the Devil) and was later associated with an oratory dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Despite floods and repairs, its medieval character endures, offering visitors a chance to step back into a pivotal moment of Tuscany’s architectural history.
