MUST Matera

About

A complex made of four different caves, completely dug up underground in the structure of a typical Matera neighbourhood. An ancient sites of productive activities were reborn in a new shape, as spaces for exhibitions and cultural activities. A journey into mother Earth, to an ancient underground area, hidden in the heart of the city and surrounded by latter tuff buildings. Located in the centre of Matera, in the overground area of Piano, a few metres away from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, it is the ideal place to learn the history of Sassi, excavations, artificial caves, the rock, ground and elements which favoured life in this thousand-year-old city. Inside MUST, while visiting an ancient olive oil mill, cellars for the production and storage of wine, an old tannery, ancient hallways and modern additions, an air-raid shelter, cisterns and all the signs of centuries-old productive activities, you will be able to discover Matera’s history.
