Cathedral of Messina
About
The Cathedral of Messina, founded in 1197 during the Norman period, stands as a testament to the city’s resilience, having survived multiple earthquakes and wartime bombings. The beautiful Norman façade is complemented by a richly decorated interior that showcases Baroque mosaics, marble floors, and the impressive tapestry of royal tombs and church furnishings. Visitors are welcome to enter for free, but guided tours—available in Italian, English, French, Spanish, and German—require prior reservation, and an optional audio guide is available for €4. The site also hosts the Museum of the Cathedral, known as the Treasury, which houses a stunning collection of artifacts from the 10th to the 20th century, and the astronomical clock tower, home to the world’s most complex mechanical and astronomical mechanism. Together, these attractions provide a comprehensive experience of Messina’s rich religious, artistic, and scientific heritage.
