About
The San Michele Cemetery, situated on the island of Isola di San Michele between Venice and Murano, has served as the city’s principal burial ground since its opening in 1807. The cemetery’s sprawling, multidenominational grounds comprise a main Catholic burial area, a Protestant section (Reparto Evangelico) and an Eastern Orthodox section, as well as a separate Cappella Emiliano chapel and a modernly designed ossuary. Its historic graves house many celebrated figures—from opera icon Rita Conte to composer Igor Stravinsky—while the 1998 extension by architect David Chipperfield added serene courtyards, a service building and an updated ossuary, enhancing the site’s contemplative atmosphere.
