Santuario di San Bernardino Alle Ossa
About
The Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa is a historic Catholic sanctuary in Milan, renowned for its intimate ossuary filled with intricately arranged human bones and skulls that transform the interior into a macabre yet contemplative space. Initially established in the 13th century to house the remnants of a nearby cemetery, the sanctuary underwent several reconstructions, with the current Baroque church completed in 1776. Visitors are welcome Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM, Saturdays 9:30 AM to 6 PM, and Sundays 9:30 AM to 12 PM, with the ossuary closed on Sunday. The site offers a unique blend of historical architecture, devotional art, and a rare opportunity to reflect on mortality amid the picturesque setting of Piazza Santo Stefano.
