Rocca Di Vignola
About
The Rocca di Vignola is a medieval fortress-turned-palace perched on a sandstone spur overlooking the Panaro valley in the heart of Emilia‑Romagna. First mentioned in the late 12th century, it has been the seat of the Este and Contrari families, a refuge during wars, and today a living museum of the region’s history and culture. Visitors can explore its five levels – from the underground “Sala dei Contrari” and “Sala dei Grassoni” to the grand courtyards and tower walkways – all of which are illuminated by the castle’s rich frescoes, armorial coats of arms, and historic artillery pieces. The Rocca also offers immersive experiences such as guided tours led by historian Valerio Massimo Manfredi, theatrical events like “Viaggio nel mistero delle pietre,” and a children’s section that brings the castle’s stories to life with playful characters. Accessible to the public free of charge, the site opens daily from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm (except on Mondays) and hosts special opening hours, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year. Its blend of architectural beauty, historical depth and interactive programming makes the Rocca a must‑see attraction for families, history enthusiasts, and cultural travellers alike.
