Vesuvius National Park, located southeast of Naples, is a unique blend of natural wonder and cultural heritage. Centered on the active volcano Mount Vesuvius and its ancient crater Monte Somma, the park spans more than 70 km² and hosts a diverse array of flora and fauna – from Mediterranean scrub to rare orchid species. Beyond its geological significance, the park offers a network of 54 km of well‑marked walking trails that wind through green valleys, volcanic slopes, and historic villages, making it a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts alike. Established on 5 June 1995, the park protects an area that was once inhabited by the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, whose ruins lie on the southern rim.
