The castle existed at the beginning of the 13th century, though not in its present features. Its shape had to be at least in the system, what we still see. Further modifications probably date to the end of the fifteenth century, concurrently with the establishment of Malaspina and the necessary strengthening of the site. At the end of the nineteenth century, the castle was in a state of degradation and ruin. In 1913, on 29 March, the architect Terenzio, architect of the R. Superintendence to the Monuments of Liguria, writes to the architect commendator Alfredo D'Andrade, on behalf of Marquis Carpaneto Spinola, master of the castle, to send the papers concerning the castle, from the Turin office to that of Genoa, because, as with agreements with the 'illustrious architect, restoration work can begin.
