About

Teatro della Concordia, located in the historic Umbrian town of Monte Castello di Vibio, is celebrated as the smallest theatre in Italy—and arguably the world—yet it boasts an atmosphere that rivals any grander venue. With a modest capacity of 99 seats distributed among 62 elegant box seats and 37 stalls, the theatre’s intimate setting amplifies the intimacy of every performance. The theatre was conceived during the Napoleonic occupation in 1808 by nine affluent Umbrian families, who sought to nurture local culture amid political change. After a period of neglect and closure in 1951, the municipality acquired the building in 1981, commissioning architects Paolo Leonelli and Mario Struzzi for a sensitive restoration. The theatre reopened in 1993, ushering in a new era of artistic vitality. Its design is quintessentially Italian: a bell‑shaped auditorium that opens to a proscenium stage. Interiors are adorned with frescoes painted by Luigi Agretti in 1892, while the wooden stage and surrounding spaces exhibit the exquisite “Goldoniano” style, giving the venue a singularly warm and historic charm. Today, Teatro della Concordia hosts a varied program of opera, prose, classical and jazz concerts, and hosts exhibitions in its underground Sala Espositiva Nello Latini. The venue also serves as a venue for civil weddings, business meetings, and community gatherings. It welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as daytime tours during July and August, providing a rare opportunity for audiences to experience a uniquely small yet historically rich theatre in the heart of Umbria.
