I Segreti del Chiostro
About
I Segreti del Chiostro is Palermo’s living homage to the city’s monastic pastry tradition. Nestled inside the former Dominican convent of Santa Caterina, the shop showcases age‑old confectionery recipes that were once shared only between the monastery’s nuns. The sweet offerings—ricotta cakes, almond biscotti, fritti, and other classic Sicilian desserts—are made with simple, natural ingredients, no preservatives, and an authentic artisanal touch. Visitors stroll through the historic cloister, tasting the aromas of citrus, honey, and vanilla that echo the monastery’s storied past. In addition to its culinary delights, the location doubles as a small museum, offering an educational glimpse into the heritage of monastic baking, the practices of the 21 cloistered nuns, and the transformation of the convent into a cultural venue. The shop’s book, “Il Libro I Segreti del Chiostro,” further deepens the experience, recounting the monastery’s history and the recipes that shaped Palermo’s pastry culture. Open daily, the confectionery operates from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the warmer months and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in winter, ensuring visitors always encounter freshly made sweets in a tranquil setting.
