Quattro Canti
About
Quattro Canti, officially known as Piazza Vigliena, is the pulsating heart of Palermo’s historic district. Located at the intersection of Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, this Baroque square was planned between 1608 and 1620 by Spanish viceroys and showcases an elegant octagonal layout with four‑story facades in the classic Sicilian style. At street level the four corner buildings each house a fountain that commemorates a season – spring, summer, autumn, and winter – sculpted by prominent artists of the time. The second floor hosts statues of the Spanish monarchs who ruled Sicily, while the roofline is adorned with statues of the city’s patron saints, creating a stunning vertical narrative of Palermo’s history. A walk around Quattro Canti offers visitors an immersive journey through architectural and historical layers, from the Norman era to Spanish Baroque, making it a must‑visit landmark for anyone exploring Palermo’s cultural heritage.
