About

The I 3 Ponti di Calatrava are a trio of striking steel arch bridges that have become an iconic symbol of Reggio Emilia. Designed by the renowned architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the bridges were completed between 2007 and 2008 and span the valley of the river Trebbia, intersecting the A1 Autostrada del Sole. Each bridge is characterized by a slender, gently curved arch that gives the structures an almost translucent quality when viewed against the sky. The northern and southern “Ponte Laterale” bridges share the same elegance, each extending 180 m (590 ft) and featuring twin arches that converge at a trussed bridgehead. The third bridge, the Ponte della Costituzione, is slightly smaller, measuring 88 m (289 ft) in an arch form that serves as a pedestrian footbridge. Together, they form a continuous but dynamic visual statement, linking both sides of the highway while providing pedestrian access and spectacular viewpoints. Local residents and visitors alike are drawn to the slender spires of the arches, which not only represent Calatrava’s signature of fluid, skeletal construction but also incorporate advanced engineering techniques that reduce material use while maximizing structural strength. The bridges stand in contrast to the surrounding low-lying architecture, creating striking silhouettes in Reggio Emilia’s skyline and serving as a focal point for city tours, photography, and architectural study.
