About

In 1438, Saint Bernardine of Siena, wishing to provide for the apostolic and intellectual formation of the young friars, promoted in Monteripido the establishment of the Studium Generale of the Osservanza. Contacts between Monteripido and the University of Perugia were particularly intense, with an exchange of books, academic essays and correspondence. A passion for learning led to a passion for books as indispensable tools for religious and academic formation. In 1723, the library possessed about 4,000 books collected in bookshelves that were insufficient to contain them. For this reason, in 1754 the foundations were laid for the construction of the new large library building, designed by the architect Pietro Carattoli. He completed the architectural work in 1769; in 1779, he completed the wooden cabinets, which he himself designed and embellished with golden scrolls indicating the different disciplines.
