About

The Monastery of San Francesco del Monte has been a Franciscan presence in Perugia since the beginnings of the Order of Friars Minor. Blessed Giles, the third companion of Francis of Assisi, took up residence on the hill north of Perugia, called Monteripido, in 1229. After his death, the place where a domus, an oratorium and other buildings were, was donated to the friars on the condition that they live there to preserve and spread the memory of Giles. In 1374, Paoluccio Trinci won a dispute against the heretical Fraticelli, and was granted the hermitage of Monteripido. Soon this place was inhabited by friars who shone for holiness and doctrine. James of the Marches induced many young men to join the Franciscan Order. John of Capistrano became a Franciscan in Monteripido to spend the year of his novitiate. Bernardine of Siena in 1440 instituted the General Study of the Order at Monteripido. The monastery complex is distinguished by its cloisters, church, and historical library.
