Fontana Maggiore
About
Fontana Maggiore, often called the “Monument of Perugia,” sits at the heart of Piazza IV Novembre and dates back to the late 13th century. Commissioned by the city council and designed by Fra Bevignate da Cingoli, the fountain stands on a basalt base and rises to a bronze cup that pours water from a trio of nymphs into two concentric marble basins. Its lower basin is decorated with 25 bas-reliefs depicting the Roman calendar and 12 zodiac signs, each scene capturing a moment of daily life. The upper basin holds 24 statues of biblical, Roman, and local heroes, including Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the Virgin of Perugia. The fountain represents a blend of Christian symbolism and classical heritage, making it an emblematic landmark that has entertained locals and visitors for centuries.
