San Damiano
About
San Damiano, a Roman‑Catholic church and monastery perched in the historic town of Assisi, dates back to the 12th century. The rugged, hut‑shaped façade and single‑nave interior, crowned by an ogival barrel vault, are centred around a rose window and a wooden crucifix dated to 1637. According to the Church’s miracles narrative, the saintly figure of Saint Francis heard a divine voice from the crucifix in 1205, guiding him to restore the church – and, by extension, the Catholic Church – to its former glory. His touch set in motion the founding of the Order of Saint Clare, whose convent next to San Damiano remains open to the public free of charge. Visitors can wander through the modest chapels, admire 14th‑century frescoes of the Madonna with Child, and contemplate the humble monastic life that once thrived here. Whether a pilgrim, history enthusiast or art lover, the site offers a peaceful window into medieval spirituality and Franciscans’ devotion.
