Castello di Rivalta is a grand fortified complex located in Rivalta, a frazione of Gazzola in the province of Piacenza, Italy. Traces of the castle date back to the 11th century, when it was first mentioned in the donation records of the Benedictine monks of San Savino. Over the centuries it has been a strategic military stronghold, a noble residence, and today it serves as a private residence and a popular heritage destination. The castle is surrounded by a lush, wooded garden and houses a museum of military costume, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and times of the Zanardi-Landi family who have owned the property since the 14th century. Guided tours of the castle are available every day of the year except on Christmas Day, with multiple visiting slots throughout the day—typically at 11:00, 15:30, and additional evening tours on Saturdays and Sundays. Booking is mandatory and strongly recommended, especially during peak times (November–February) when a supplementary fee of €35 (or €25 for some dates) applies. Guests are asked to arrive on time and to print or bring a digital copy of their reservation. The interior consists of about fifty rooms, some reserved for guided visits while others remain private. Highlights include the magnificent facades, the noble halls, the dining and kitchen areas, the cellars, the tour of the tower, and the fascinating museum rooms showcasing a collection of armaments and historical artifacts. The castle’s tower, originally a medieval watchtower, remains a focal point of the complex. Visitors can also explore the adjacent Borgo di Rivalta—a medieval village featuring structures such as the Chapel of San Martino, the Hotel Torre di San Martino, the spa & wellness center, and historic cafés. These sites offer a complementary cultural experience within the castle’s grounds.
