Torre Medievale e Rocca Degli Appiani
About
Situated on a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Castello di Populonia—originally built by a Pisa community in the 12th century—forms a dramatic medieval fortress that once guarded the Tuscan archipelago. Later fortified in the 15th century by the Lords of Piombino, the structure blends imposing watchtowers, curtain walls and a chapel from the 12th–13th centuries. Visitors can stroll through the ancient courtyard and follow the stone walkway that linked the fortress with surrounding Etruscan settlements, enjoying sweeping sea views and proximity to nearby islands. Inside, a modern museum showcases Etruscan artefacts, while guided tours highlight the unique fusion of military architecture and maritime heritage.
