The Castle and its Rock ….a sentinel on the border between Lucca and Pisa…….once theatre of war and today…theatre of quietness and peace… The HISTORY It is likely that Nozzano Castello dates back to pre-Roman times, but despite its ancient origins the first verified record of this ancient historic village appears in 839 AD under the name of ” Inotiano, Notiano, Noctiano, Nothano, Nuzzano “. As a result of researches on the origin of the name Nozzano it is said that this may come by the name of a noble Roman – Noctianus – who had properties in this area, as a consequence of the “centuriazione” (i.e. the assignement of parcels of land as a recompense to the brave legionnaires in retirement). In 1322 the famous leader of Lucca, Castruccio Castracani, wanted the place to be converted into a powerful little fortress with the main purpose of constantly watching the territory all around....
