About

Palazzo Comunale, also known as the People’s Palace, stands proudly on San Gimignano’s Piazza del Duomo. This medieval civic building houses the town’s civic museum, offering an impressive collection of frescoes and paintings by Florence and Siena masters such as Lippo Memmi, Coppo di Marcovaldo and Filippino Lippi. The upper levels hold the iconic Torre Grossa – the tallest tower in San Gimignano at 54 meters – and the Sala di Dante, the former council chamber where Dante Alighieri once addressed the mayor. Visitors wander through the council hall, gallery, and historic courtyard, admiring coats of arms, a 14th‑century cistern, and the architectural splendor of the city’s medieval heart.
