About
Ospedale del Ceppo, situated in the historic heart of Pistoia, is a medieval hospital that has evolved into a cultural landmark. Founded in 1277, the complex showcases a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, highlighted by a 16th‑century loggia inspired by Brunelleschi’s Ospedale degli Innocenti. The site also houses a remarkable glazed terracotta frieze by Santi Buglioni depicting the Seven Works of Mercy, as well as elegant tondoes painted by Giovanni della Robbia that illustrate scenes from the Life of the Virgin. The Ospedale del Ceppo offers visitors a unique glimpse into early Italian Renaissance art and the social history of medieval healthcare.
