About

The Mausoleum of Theodoric, situated just outside Ravenna in Italy, is a striking monument of early Gothic architecture constructed in AD 520 by Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths. Its distinctive decagonal design and massive 10‑metre stone roof—composed of a single, 230‑tonne carved stone—set it apart from contemporary Roman and Byzantine structures. Inside, the upper floor contains a fragmentary Roman porphyry tub, while the lower level reveals a niche believed to have functioned as a funeral chapel. Over the centuries the mausoleum's purpose evolved, serving as a Christian oratory before being re‑exhumed during the Byzantine era. In 1996 it was jointly inscribed with six other Ravenna monuments as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna". Today visitors can explore its austere yet imposing rooms, admire the stonework, and gain insight into Ostrogothic religious and cultural traditions.
