Piazza del Popolo
About
Piazza del Popolo stands at the heart of Ravenna, a living testament to the city’s medieval and Renaissance heritage. For more than seven centuries, it has served as the civic centre, hosting the city’s municipal palace and the Prefecture. The square is defined by its iconic two columns – one crowned with the statue of Saint Apollinare, the patron of Ravenna, and the other originally bearing a lion of Saint Mark – as well as the historic Roman basements that feature zodiac motifs. Visitors can stroll beneath the ancient meridian clock, once used to mark noon, and explore the surrounding architectural landmarks such as Palazzo Merlato and the Torre dell’Orologio. Its lively cafés, street vendors, and constant tourist traffic make the piazza a vibrant meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
